Toronto-based vocalist and performer Kayla Kushnir doesn’t just sing songs — she embodies the emotion and intention buried within them. With roots in musical theatre and a growing presence in contemporary pop, her work is shaped by a deep passion for storytelling and a desire to explore the in-between: where technique meets emotion, and style allows for a more personal touch.
Her performances carry an emotional intensity, grounded in over a decade and a half of theatre training, but driven by curiosity, rather than perfection. It’s that curiosity that continues to guide her, pushing her toward new collaborations, new sounds, and new ways of expressing her soul.
Currently pursuing a degree in Vocal Performance with a minor in Sport and Event Management at the University of Guelph, Kushnir’s dedication to contemporary music was recognized when she led a band called Collective Chaos and wrote an unreleased ‘banger’, titled “Take A Chance”. Kushnir has since competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, placing first in her Commercial Music category. These moments led a shift in genre and discovery of artistic identity, opening her up to a world of endless musical possibilities.
Kushnir has collaborated with producers including Griffley, DJ Twan, DJ Mintzohh, and JSDR, while also working alongside a growing network of musicians and creatives such as Juliano Campedelli, Andrew Schoettler, Ben Finnell, Leslie Avendano, Benji Crane, Ellie McGrath, Tristan Longman, and many more. Her live work continues to evolve as well, including a recent performance with Toronto-based band, Whispr, at Relay For Life at the University of Guelph in March, 2026.
Kushnir believes that while an artist’s sound continues to take shape as musicians grow, her foundation in musical theatre continues to influence everything she creates. In December 2025, Kushnir made her community theatre debut as Heather McNamara in Heathers The Musical with Connect Theatre and The Oakville Players - a role that brought her back to her roots and reaffirmed that she has what it takes to make it in the music performance industry. As well, Kushnir has recently completed a six-show run of Shrek the Musical, playing Donkey, at the Fergus Grand Theatre and Sanderson Centre (July & August, 2026). These have been HUGE personal triumphs for Kushnir.
When she’s not performing, you can find Kushnir in the gym, writing her next song, or meal prepping for the week. Kushnir prioritizes physical health immensely and takes pride in the discipline she has to love her mind, body, and soul and most importantly, take care of it.
